Literary Things to Do in NYC #1: The Morgan Museum & Library
Originally, the personal library of John Pierpont Morgan Sr., where he had assembled his marvelous literary collection of rare and historically important prints and manuscripts, and now, a magnificent museum for all literary enthusiasts to enjoy. Take note that the museum has a Free Friday program, where you can get free tickets!
1. The West Room Vault
This secure chamber was designed by the architect Charles McKim, and for many years, was used as the storage room for the most extraordinary manuscripts.
2. The East Room
A breathtaking room with three-story bookshelves that are stacked with rare printed books, under a magnificent ceiling. Gutenberg's Bible (1455), autographed manuscripts by M. R. James and Mark Twain, are just but a few of the paramount prints that are presented there.
3. The North Room
Used to function as the librarian's office and now serves as a gallery of prints, art, jewels, and objects of the earliest works from Morgan's collection.
4. The Little Prince Exhibition
Don't forget to check out the exhibitions! I was lucky to attend The Little Prince Taking Flight exhibition which included original drawings, drafts, and early prints. I also learned more about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's inspiration and background.
A wonderful experience to walk around surrounded by masterpieces that are presented in a marvelous space. Highly recommend paying up a visit if you are in the area.
